Creative Storytelling Photography Workshop

Saturday 29 August
Downtown Area - 3pm - 3 Hours
Santa Rosa Photography Group
Christyl O'Flaherty
Discover how to transform ordinary spaces, simple objects, and fleeting ideas into powerful visual stories. This hands-on workshop is designed for photographers, artists, and creators who want to learn the process of building impactful imagery from nothing more than imagination and intention.

Participants will explore the foundations of visual storytelling, including concept development, mood and emotion, composition, lighting, styling, and creative direction. Through guided exercises and collaborative projects, students will learn how to identify inspiration, develop a narrative, and use available resources 2014whether a single prop, an empty room, or natural light 2014to create photographs that captivate and connect with viewers.

The workshop will cover techniques for brainstorming concepts, building storyboards and mood boards, directing models, selecting wardrobe and props, and using symbolism to add depth and meaning to an image. Students will gain insight into how professional photographers craft memorable editorial and fine art work by transforming everyday moments into cinematic experiences.

The final hour of the workshop will include proctored storytelling sessions with models on site, giving participants the opportunity to apply the creative techniques explored throughout the class. Guided by the instructor, students will use their cameras to capture emotion, composition, and narrative, learning how thoughtful choices behind the lens can transform a simple scene into a compelling visual story. Participants will leave with new storytelling skills and portfolio-worthy images.

All skill levels are welcome. Participants should have a basic understanding of their camera and its settings, as this workshop focuses on creativity, storytelling, and artistic development rather than technical instruction.

Whether you are picking up a camera for the first time or looking to deepen your artistic voice, this workshop will provide the tools, confidence, and inspiration to create compelling photographic stories that leave a lasting impact.

Tis image was made using Windsor & Newton watercolour on A5 cartridge paper in my concertina sketchbook. I went camping in Devon for a week with a group of girlfriends. Most of us enjoy the process of art making so, I carried my small sketchbook and tin of paints to this beach with me. The beach is inaccessible by car and can only be reached by walking along a steep, narrow, rocky and winding cliff path. You have to carry everything you want to take on your back. I knew i wanted the chance to pa

Title or Location: Costa Brava Boats
Our family was vacationing in Tossa de Mar, Spain. We had ben out for a walk but it was beginning to rain and as we hurried home, I saw these boats up on the sand. I was just really drawn to them so I ran over and took a photo before the rain really started coming down. Months later, I decided to paint the scene.
